New Tools for Leading Change in Infection Prevention: Discovery, Engagement and Improvisation

Infection prevention professionals continue to lead change initiatives in the journey to zero bloodstream infections. Attaining and sustaining zero requires that those leading practice improvements have enhanced skills in the identification of barriers to best practice adherence and specific obstacles to change.

Ruth Carrico, PHD, RN, CIC will present new tools and strategies for implementing practice change. These include the use of discovery, engagement and improvisation. Use of these non-traditional models will allow each facility to customize change efforts to their local needs and to address real time situations in their healthcare work environment related to infection prevention. The speaker will provide tips on the development, use and measurement of improvisation exercises in addition to a template for participative discovery.

Objectives:

  1. Describe use of new tools for enabling local, real-time change in the prevention of central line-associated bloodstream infections.

  2. State how the use of improvisation/role play can assist with discovery of practices and model the desired responses to practice challenges.
