Learning Objectives
Unless pharmaceutical waste is properly managed, it poses serious risks — not only to the environment but also to hospitals and their bottom line. The EPA requires that pharmaceutical waste be managed safely from the moment it is generated to when it is appropriately disposed. Pharmacists are accountable for this "cradle to grave" management and may be held personally liable. At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- List environmental, regulatory and financial reasons for the stringent management of pharmaceutical waste.
- List various stakeholders who should be involved in developing a multidisciplinary program to effectively manage pharmaceutical waste.
- Discuss the pros and cons of various approaches to pharmaceutical waste management, including advanced technology options.
